Números 3

VBL · Chapter 3/36

Summary

God sets apart the tribe of Levi to serve Aaron and his sons in caring for the tabernacle, in place of the firstborn of Israel. The Levite clans (Gershon, Kohath, Merari) receive specific tasks, and a census and redemption of the surplus firstborn is carried out.

Explanation

This chapter explains why the Levites take the place of the firstborn: after God spared the Israelite firstborn in the tenth plague on Egypt, he claimed them as his own — and now he chooses the entire tribe of Levi to symbolically represent that collective redemption. Each Levite clan received a specific practical function related to transporting and caring for parts of the tabernacle, showing that service to God involves concrete and varied tasks, not just one role. The death of Nadab and Abihu is recalled here again as a sobering backdrop for understanding why access to the sacred needs clear order. The application today: serving God often means accepting a specific task within a larger purpose, even when it seems less visible than others.

Fun facts

  • The 'redemption' of the 273 Israelite firstborn who exceeded the number of Levites, paid in silver (five shekels per head), is one of the earliest documented religious transactions in the Bible with a fixed monetary value.
  • Moses and Aaron were from the tribe of Levi, but only Aaron's direct descendants became priests — the rest of the Levites, including Moses' own line, served in supporting roles, showing that not every spiritual privilege automatically converts into a greater hereditary position.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. Números 3:1The chapter changes subject: after the military censuses, now comes the genealogy of Aaron and Moses, recorded from the moment God spoke on Sinai.
  2. Números 3:2Aaron had four sons: Nadab, the firstborn, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These names will appear throughout the chapter, since his family forms the priestly line.
  3. Números 3:3These four sons of Aaron were the anointed priests, officially consecrated to exercise the priesthood, with their own installation ritual described elsewhere in the Pentateuch.
  4. Números 3:4Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord when they offered unauthorized fire, and they left no children; so only Eleazar and Ithamar went on serving as priests alongside their father.
  5. Números 3:5Another instruction comes to Moses, this time about the role the tribe of Levi would take on within the religious system.
  6. Números 3:6The tribe of Levi is placed at the disposal of Aaron the priest, to serve as his assistants in the work of the sanctuary.
  7. Números 3:7The Levites are made responsible for the tasks of the tabernacle on behalf of the whole congregation, carrying out the day-to-day religious service.
  8. Números 3:8Beyond that, the Levites take care of all the furnishings of the tent of the congregation, serving the people of Israel by keeping the tabernacle running in order.
  9. Números 3:9God formally hands the Levites over to Aaron and his sons, as a kind of gift taken from among the people of Israel to serve them alone.
  10. Números 3:10Only Aaron and his sons could actually carry out the priesthood; any outsider who tried to take on that role risked death, reinforcing the boundary around who could approach what was sacred.
  11. Números 3:11Another word from the Lord to Moses, introducing the explanation of why the Levites replace the firstborn, detailed in the next verse.
  12. Números 3:12God had spared the firstborn of Israel during the last plague on Egypt, and so He considered every firstborn His by right. Here He settles this in a practical way: instead of requiring each family to hand over its oldest son for sacred service, the whole tribe of Levi steps into that place on behalf of all the firstborn of Israel.
  13. Números 3:13The reason the Levites belong to God goes back further: on the night He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, sparing those of Israel, He claimed for Himself every Israelite firstborn, human or animal.
  14. Números 3:14Still in the wilderness of Sinai, the Lord gives Moses the next instruction: take a specific census of the tribe of Levi.
  15. Números 3:15Unlike the military census in chapter 1, here the count of the Levites begins at one month old, because their role was not to fight, but to stand in for the firstborn of Israel from birth.
  16. Números 3:16Moses carries out this count of the Levites exactly, following to the letter the order he had received.
  17. Números 3:17Levi had three sons, and each one gave rise to one of the three Levite clans that will organize the rest of the chapter: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
  18. Números 3:18The clan of Gershon divides into two families, descended from Libni and Shimei.
  19. Números 3:19The clan of Kohath divides into four families, descended from Amram, Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel — it is from this line, through Amram, that Moses and Aaron come.
  20. Números 3:20The clan of Merari divides into two families, descended from Mahli and Mushi, rounding out the three branches of the tribe of Levi.
  21. Números 3:21From the clan of Gershon come the Libnite and Shimeite families, together called the Gershonites.
  22. Números 3:22Counted from one month old and up, the Gershonites numbered 7,500 men.
  23. Números 3:23The Gershonites camped behind the tabernacle, on the west side — one of the four positions reserved for the Levites around the sanctuary.
  24. Números 3:24The leader in charge of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
  25. Números 3:25It fell to the Gershonites to care for the tabernacle itself: the tent, its covering, and the curtain at the entrance.
  26. Números 3:26They were also in charge of the curtains of the courtyard, the entrance to the courtyard, and all the cords used in the service of the sanctuary.
  27. Números 3:27From the clan of Kohath come four families — the Amramites, Izeharites, Hebronites, and Uzzielites — together called the Kohathites.
  28. Números 3:28Counted from one month old and up, the Kohathites numbered 8,600 men, responsible for the sanctuary’s most sacred objects.
  29. Números 3:29The Kohathites were responsible for carrying the tabernacle’s most sacred objects — the ark, the table, the lampstand — on their shoulders, without a cart. It was from the clan of Kohath that Moses and Aaron came.
  30. Números 3:30The leader in charge of the Kohathites was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
  31. Números 3:31The most delicate part fell to the Kohathites: carrying the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the other sacred objects used in worship.
  32. Números 3:32Above all the Levite leaders stood Eleazar son of Aaron, with general oversight of those who cared for the sanctuary.
  33. Números 3:33From the clan of Merari come the Mahlite and Mushite families, together called the Merarites.
  34. Números 3:34Counted from one month old and up, the Merarites numbered 6,200 men, the smallest of the three Levite clans.
  35. Números 3:35The leader in charge of the Merarites was Zuriel son of Abihail, and his group camped on the north side of the tabernacle.
  36. Números 3:36It fell to the Merarites to care for the tabernacle’s heavy framework: the boards, bars, pillars, sockets, and other structural pieces.
  37. Números 3:37They also kept charge of the pillars around the courtyard, their sockets, pegs, and cords.
  38. Números 3:38On the east side, in the most prominent position, camped Moses, Aaron, and his sons, responsible for the sanctuary on behalf of the whole people; any outsider who came near there risked death.
  39. Números 3:39Adding up the three clans, the total number of Levites counted by Moses and Aaron, following the Lord’s order, came to 22,000 men from one month old and up.
  40. Números 3:40Now God commands that all the firstborn males of Israel be counted separately, from one month old and up, in order to compare that number with the Levites’.
  41. Números 3:41The idea is clear: the Levites replace Israel’s human firstborn, and the Levites’ livestock replaces the Israelites’ firstborn livestock.
  42. Números 3:42Moses carries out this census of the firstborn exactly as the Lord had commanded.
  43. Números 3:43The total number of firstborn males in Israel, counted from one month old and up, came to 22,273 — a larger number than the Levites’, which will lead to the adjustment made in the verses that follow.
  44. Números 3:44Once again the Lord speaks with Moses, now to explain how to resolve the difference between the number of Levites and the number of firstborn.
  45. Números 3:45God repeats the instruction: the Levites stand in the place of Israel’s firstborn, and their livestock in the place of the people’s firstborn livestock, because the Levites belong to God.
  46. Números 3:46Since there were 273 more firstborn than there were Levites available to replace them, this specific surplus needed to be redeemed another way, with money.
  47. Números 3:47Since there were more Israelite firstborn than Levites to replace them one for one (273 more, counted in the previous verse), this surplus needed to be redeemed with money instead of service. Five shekels of silver per head, paid to the priests, worked as a kind of compensation to settle the account.
  48. Números 3:48The money paid to redeem these 273 surplus firstborn was to be handed over to Aaron and his sons.
  49. Números 3:49Moses then collects the redemption money for this group left over beyond the number of Levites.
  50. Números 3:50The total amount collected from this redemption was 1,365 shekels, reckoned by the official weight of the sanctuary shekel.
  51. Números 3:51Following the Lord’s order, Moses hands this redemption money over to Aaron and his sons, closing out the settlement between the Levites and the firstborn.
