Ester 5

VBL · Chapter 5/10

Summary

Esther appears before the king unsummoned and is received with favor. Instead of making her request right away, she invites the king and Haman to two banquets. Meanwhile, Haman, full of pride, has a gallows built for Mordecai.

Explanation

Esther's patient strategy—delaying her request across two banquets instead of revealing everything at once—shows wisdom and self-control in a moment of extremely high tension. This delay also creates narrative space for the events of the next chapter, which will prove decisive. Meanwhile, Haman's unchecked pride is highlighted in an almost comic way: he boasts of his wealth and honors to his friends and wife, yet confesses that none of it satisfies him as long as Mordecai remains alive and refuses to bow to him. The gallows he has built, meant to publicly humiliate his enemy, will become a powerful irony later in the story.

Fun facts

  • The gallows Haman has built stood about 75 feet tall (50 cubits), an exaggeratedly high structure designed for the maximum public humiliation of Mordecai.
  • Esther's act of holding out the golden scepter symbolized royal pardon and permission to approach—without that gesture, she could have been executed simply for entering the king's presence uninvited.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. Ester 5:1After three days of fasting, Esther formally dresses as queen and positions herself where the king could see her, risking her own life by entering unsummoned.
  2. Ester 5:2When Esther appears before the king unsummoned, he holds out the golden sceptre toward her, a sign that averted the death penalty prescribed by court law. It is the moment when the risk she took on in the previous chapter turns out in her favor.
  3. Ester 5:3Instead of punishing her, the king reacts with extreme generosity, offering up to half the kingdom before even knowing what she actually wanted to ask.
  4. Ester 5:4Instead of making her request right there, Esther invites the king and, surprisingly, Haman too, to a private banquet, delaying the real revelation of her plan.
  5. Ester 5:5The king grants the request without question, and the two of them go together to the first of the two banquets Esther arranges.
  6. Ester 5:6Even at the banquet, the king repeats his generous offer, hoping to finally hear the real reason behind it all.
  7. Ester 5:7Esther begins to answer, but interrupts her own words and delays the revelation once again, heightening the tension of the scene.
  8. Ester 5:8Instead of revealing her request, Esther invites both of them to a second banquet the next day, a strategy of patience that also gives time for the events of chapter 6 to unfold first.
  9. Ester 5:9Haman leaves the banquet feeling extremely honored, but it only takes seeing Mordecai refuse to bow once again for all that joy to turn instantly into rage.
  10. Ester 5:10Haman manages to control himself in public, but as soon as he gets home he gathers his wife and friends to vent and seek support.
  11. Ester 5:11Haman spends much of the conversation boasting about everything he had achieved — wealth, children, prestige — before even getting to the real reason for his anger.
  12. Ester 5:12He proudly points out that he was the only guest, besides the king, invited to Esther’s private banquets, an extra symbol of prestige in his own mind.
  13. Ester 5:13Despite all these honors, Haman admits none of it means anything as long as Mordecai remains alive and visible, refusing to bow before him.
  14. Ester 5:14Haman’s wife and his friends suggest he build a gallows of exaggerated height and ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it, even before the next banquet. This plan, meant to solve Haman’s problem with Mordecai, will later turn against Haman himself.
