📖 Chapter study

Summary

The complete genealogy of the tribe of Levi is presented, including the priestly line of Aaron, the temple singers appointed by David, and the list of cities given to the Levites throughout the territory of Israel.

Explanation

The tribe of Levi receives special attention because it was responsible for worship and the priesthood, without receiving a territory of its own like the other tribes — instead, specific cities scattered throughout the country were assigned to them. The chapter also details the line of the temple musicians and singers, showing that organized worship through music was regarded as service just as important as ritual priesthood. This care in documenting who could serve where and in what role reflects the chronicler's concern, writing after the exile, to properly reestablish the structures of worship that had been interrupted by the destruction of the temple.

Fun facts

  • The 48 Levitical cities scattered throughout Israel, including the cities of refuge, ensured that priests and Levites were present in every region of the country, helping to maintain a distributed religious influence rather than one centered only in Jerusalem.
  • Samuel, the prophet and last judge of Israel, is listed here as belonging to the Levitical line, which helps explain why he was able to perform priestly and prophetic functions from a young age at the tabernacle.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. 1 Crónicas 6:1Levi, Jacob’s third son, has three sons who will give rise to the three great Levitical families: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari — each with a different role in caring for the tabernacle, and later the temple.
  2. 1 Crónicas 6:2Of Kohath’s four sons, Amram is the most important for the rest of the chapter: it is from him that Aaron’s family comes, and by extension the whole priesthood of Israel.
  3. 1 Crónicas 6:3Here are born the three most famous siblings of the Exodus — Aaron, Moses, and Miriam — and the four sons of Aaron; two of them, Nadab and Abihu, die young for offering strange fire to God, so the priesthood continues through Eleazar and Ithamar.
  4. 1 Crónicas 6:4The direct list of high priests begins, each one the son of the last: from Eleazar comes Phinehas, the same zealous man who stops a plague in Israel in Numbers, and from him comes Abishua.
  5. 1 Crónicas 6:5The priestly line runs from Abishua to Bukki and then to Uzzi — names that appear only here, but that form part of a chain that never breaks until the exile.
  6. 1 Crónicas 6:6Two more links in the same priestly chain: from Uzzi comes Zerahiah, and from Zerahiah comes Meraioth — the chronicler is documenting every generation without skipping any.
  7. 1 Crónicas 6:7The priestly line continues through Amariah and then Ahitub — names that set the stage for a much better-known priest, mentioned right in the next verse.
  8. 1 Crónicas 6:8Here appears Zadok, the faithful priest who anoints Solomon king instead of supporting Adonijah’s rebellion, and his son Ahimaaz, the messenger who runs to tell David about the end of Absalom’s revolt.
  9. 1 Crónicas 6:9From Ahimaaz comes Azariah, and from him Johanan — the priestly list keeps advancing generation after generation, getting closer and closer to the time of the temple itself.
  10. 1 Crónicas 6:10This Azariah, son of Johanan, is identified as the priest who served in the actual temple, the one Solomon built in Jerusalem — a rare historical marker in a list that usually gives only names.
  11. 1 Crónicas 6:11The priestly line runs from Azariah to Amariah and then to another Ahitub — family names repeat from generation to generation, common among priestly families.
  12. 1 Crónicas 6:12Two more links: from this Ahitub comes another Zadok, and from him Shallum — the priestly chain is getting closer and closer to the end of the kingdom of Judah.
  13. 1 Crónicas 6:13From Shallum comes Hilkiah, probably the same high priest who finds the lost Book of the Law in the temple during King Josiah’s reform, told in 2 Kings — and from him comes another Azariah.
  14. 1 Crónicas 6:14From this Azariah comes Seraiah, the high priest executed by Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah after the fall of Jerusalem, and from him Jehozadak, whom the next verse already shows being carried captive.
  15. 1 Crónicas 6:15The line of priests descended from Aaron is recorded down to the exact moment it ends in captivity in Babylon — proof that even the fall of the priesthood has a documented genealogy. It is this kind of list that those who returned from exile later used to prove who really had the right to serve in the rebuilt temple.
  16. 1 Crónicas 6:16The text restarts Levi’s genealogy, but now opening it up to all three sons equally — Gershon, Kohath, and Merari — because up to this point only Aaron’s line, within Kohath, had been detailed.
  17. 1 Crónicas 6:17The two sons of Gershon, Libni and Shimei, begin the Levitical branch that will be detailed soon in the following verses.
  18. 1 Crónicas 6:18It repeats the four sons of Kohath — Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel — this time as the starting point for detailing the families that are not Aaron’s.
  19. 1 Crónicas 6:19The two sons of Merari, Mahli and Mushi, close out the list of Levi’s grandsons — together, these three branches make up “the families of the Levites according to their fathers.”
  20. 1 Crónicas 6:20The descent of Gershon begins father to son — Libni, Jahath, Zimmah — a chain of names that will lead, generations later, to one of the temple musicians chosen by David.
  21. 1 Crónicas 6:21Gershon’s line continues for four more generations — Joah, Iddo, Zerah, Jeaterai — coming very close to the time when this family will take on a singing role in worship.
  22. 1 Crónicas 6:22Now the line of Kohath that runs through Korah — yes, the same name as the Levite who rebels against Moses in Numbers, but this family does not carry the guilt of that ancestor and continues to hold a place of honor in worship.
  23. 1 Crónicas 6:23Korah’s line runs through Elkanah, Ebiasaph, and another Assir — names that will lead, a few generations later, to a well-known family in the Bible.
  24. 1 Crónicas 6:24Four more links — Tahath, Uriel, Uzziah, Shaul — close out this part of Kohath’s line before the text turns back to detail Elkanah’s family more closely.
  25. 1 Crónicas 6:25The two sons of Elkanah, Amasai and Ahimoth, make room for a still more detailed Elkanah in the next verse — a name that will repeat quite a bit within this family.
  26. 1 Crónicas 6:26A new chain of Elkanahs and other names — Zophai, Nahath — shows how this family name passed from generation to generation within the Korahite clan.
  27. 1 Crónicas 6:27The line reaches yet another Elkanah, after passing through Eliab and Jeroham — and it is precisely this Elkanah who will be the father of one of the most important figures in the whole Bible.
  28. 1 Crónicas 6:28The sons of this Elkanah include Samuel — the prophet and last judge of Israel, the same one who anoints Saul and then David as kings — showing that Samuel was, by blood, a Levite of the Korahite family.
  29. 1 Crónicas 6:29Attention turns back to Merari: Mahli, Libni, Shimei, Uzza — a chain of four generations that will set the stage for another of the musicians chosen by David.
  30. 1 Crónicas 6:30Merari’s line closes with Shimea, Haggiah, and Asaiah — this last name will appear again as the ancestor of one of the directors of song in the temple.
  31. 1 Crónicas 6:31Only after the ark gains a fixed resting place, in the time of David, do the Levites come to have an organized singing role within worship. Before that their work was more physical, carrying and setting up the tabernacle; now it also becomes music.
  32. 1 Crónicas 6:32Before the temple existed, the Levites already sang before the tent of the congregation; when Solomon builds the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, they simply continue the same work, now in a fixed building.
  33. 1 Crónicas 6:33The full genealogy of Heman the singer begins — he is a grandson of the prophet Samuel, which explains why David chooses this very family to lead the music of worship.
  34. 1 Crónicas 6:34Heman’s lineage continues four more generations before Samuel, showing that this family’s musical reputation had roots much older than the prophet himself.
  35. 1 Crónicas 6:35Four more links in Heman’s tree — the list reaches deeper and deeper into the past, proving that this Levitical family had already existed for centuries before David organized worship.
  36. 1 Crónicas 6:36Heman’s genealogy keeps climbing, generation after generation, until it touches again the line of Korah mentioned much earlier in the chapter.
  37. 1 Crónicas 6:37Four more names from Heman’s tree, confirming the link with Korah’s family — the same family that, despite its ancestor’s rebellion, gains a role of honor in worship.
  38. 1 Crónicas 6:38Heman’s genealogy ends where the whole tribe begins: son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Israel (Jacob) himself — thirteen generations summarized to prove the singer’s legitimacy.
  39. 1 Crónicas 6:39At Heman’s right hand stands Asaph, his relative — the same Asaph tradition links to the authorship of several psalms, among them Psalm 50 and a whole block from Psalm 73 to 83.
  40. 1 Crónicas 6:40Asaph’s genealogy begins climbing generation after generation — the chronicler treats the three main musicians, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, with the same genealogical care he gives to kings and priests.
  41. 1 Crónicas 6:41Three more links in Asaph’s tree, bringing the list closer to the common root of the whole tribe of Levi.
  42. 1 Crónicas 6:42Asaph’s lineage traces back to Gershon, Levi’s son — unlike Heman, who came from Kohath, showing that the three main musicians came from different branches of the tribe.
  43. 1 Crónicas 6:43Asaph’s genealogy closes with Jahath, son of Gershon, son of Levi — the common root that already appeared earlier in the Gershonite descent at the start of the chapter.
  44. 1 Crónicas 6:44On the left stands Ethan, of the family of Merari — the third of David’s great musicians, whose genealogy is likewise carefully recorded, generation by generation, back to the root of the tribe.
  45. 1 Crónicas 6:45Ethan’s line runs through Hashabiah, Amaziah, and Hilkiah — names that show a family with its own standing within Merari’s branch.
  46. 1 Crónicas 6:46Three more links in Ethan’s tree, bringing the genealogy closer to the root of Merari mentioned much earlier in the chapter.
  47. 1 Crónicas 6:47Ethan’s genealogy ends at Merari, son of Levi — closing out David’s three main musicians with a common root, even though they came from different Levitical families.
  48. 1 Crónicas 6:48Besides the three musicians and their families, all the other Levites — the majority of them — are put in charge of the rest of the practical service of the tabernacle, the work of maintenance and support.
  49. 1 Crónicas 6:49Only Aaron and his sons, the actual priests, could offer sacrifices on the altars and make atonement for the people — a very clear line separating the work of the priests from that of the other Levites.
  50. 1 Crónicas 6:50The text repeats the genealogy of the priests from Aaron on, this time focusing only on the priestly function, without mixing in the rest of the tribe of Levi as the earlier list did.
  51. 1 Crónicas 6:51The priestly line runs from Bukki to Uzzi and then to Zerahiah — the same names as before, but now organized into a more direct list, without the detours about the singers.
  52. 1 Crónicas 6:52Three more links — Meraioth, Amariah, Ahitub — confirming the same priestly chain already told, just summarized in a more compact sequence.
  53. 1 Crónicas 6:53The priestly list stops exactly at Zadok and his son Ahimaaz — the two names tied to Solomon’s rise to the throne — before the chapter changes subject to where these families lived.
  54. 1 Crónicas 6:54The genealogy ends and the geography begins: now the text explains where each Levitical family lived, starting with the descendants of Aaron, who drew by lot the first share of cities.
  55. 1 Crónicas 6:55Aaron’s family receives Hebron, in Judah, with the surrounding fields — a city full of history, linked to Abraham, and later to the very beginning of David’s reign.
  56. 1 Crónicas 6:56But notice the careful division: the rural territory around Hebron stays with Caleb son of Jephunneh, while only the city itself goes to the priests — no one is left without a share, but no one gets everything either.
  57. 1 Crónicas 6:57Among the cities given to Aaron’s descendants are the cities of refuge, such as Hebron and Libnah — places where someone who killed by accident could take shelter until being judged fairly.
  58. 1 Crónicas 6:58Two more cities for the priests, Hilen and Debir — Debir is the same city Othniel conquers to win Achsah’s hand, told earlier in chapter 4.
  59. 1 Crónicas 6:59This group closes with Ashan and Beth-shemesh — a city that reappears years later in 1 Samuel, when the ark of the covenant, returned by the Philistines, passes right through there.
  60. 1 Crónicas 6:60From the tribe of Benjamin come three more cities for the priests, among them Anathoth — birthplace of the prophet Jeremiah, centuries later. In total, Aaron’s family receives thirteen cities.
  61. 1 Crónicas 6:61The rest of Kohath’s family, which is not of Aaron’s priestly line, receives ten cities drawn by lot from the half tribe of Manasseh — the division of territory was done by lot, not by choice.
  62. 1 Crónicas 6:62The descendants of Gershon receive thirteen cities, coming from four different tribes — Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the part of Manasseh in Bashan — spreading this Levitical family across much of Israel’s territory.
  63. 1 Crónicas 6:63The descendants of Merari receive twelve cities drawn by lot from Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun — closing out the total number of cities for the three Levitical families.
  64. 1 Crónicas 6:64The Levites never received a piece of land of their own like the other tribes — instead, they were given cities scattered throughout the territory of Israel, including cities of refuge. The idea was practical: to make sure that every Israelite, wherever they lived, had a Levite nearby to teach the law and care for worship.
  65. 1 Crónicas 6:65This verse details where the cities of the first batch came from: Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, each city named individually — nothing is left vague about which tribe gave up which piece of land.
  66. 1 Crónicas 6:66The rest of Kohath’s family also receives cities from the tribe of Ephraim — the Levite, with no territory of his own, depended entirely on these scattered grants in order to live and serve.
  67. 1 Crónicas 6:67Among the cities of Ephraim is Shechem, also a city of refuge, along with Gezer — a city that only much later, in the time of Solomon, truly becomes fully Israelite territory.
  68. 1 Crónicas 6:68Two more cities of Ephraim for this part of Kohath: Jokmeam and Beth-horon, the latter the site of more than one important battle in Israel’s history.
  69. 1 Crónicas 6:69The Ephraim group closes with Aijalon and Gath-rimmon — Aijalon is the same valley where Joshua asks the sun to stand still, in one of the most remembered battles of the conquest of Canaan.
  70. 1 Crónicas 6:70The half tribe of Manasseh (on the west side of the Jordan) completes the cities of this part of Kohath with Aner and Bileam — closing out the total territory given to this family.
  71. 1 Crónicas 6:71Now it is the turn of the descendants of Gershon: from the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, they receive Golan — also a city of refuge — and Ashtaroth.
  72. 1 Crónicas 6:72From the tribe of Issachar, the Gershonites receive Kedesh and Daberath — two more cities added to the already scattered territory of this Levitical family.
  73. 1 Crónicas 6:73The Issachar group closes with Ramoth and Anem — each city coming with its surrounding fields, the same way as all the others on the list.
  74. 1 Crónicas 6:74From the tribe of Asher, the Gershonites receive Mashal and Abdon — one more handful of cities in a list that already numbers dozens of names.
  75. 1 Crónicas 6:75The Asher group closes with Hukok and Rehob — territories far to the north, showing the almost total reach of this Levitical family across the map of Israel.
  76. 1 Crónicas 6:76From the tribe of Naphtali, the Gershonites receive Kedesh in Galilee — one more city of refuge — along with Hammon and Kirjathaim, closing out this family’s territory.
  77. 1 Crónicas 6:77Attention turns back to Merari: what remained of this family receives from the tribe of Zebulun the cities of Rimmon and Tabor.
  78. 1 Crónicas 6:78On the other side of the Jordan, in the region of Reuben, Merari receives Bezer, in the wilderness, and Jahzah — territory that lies far from the center of Israel, but still remains part of the system of Levitical cities.
  79. 1 Crónicas 6:79Two more cities of Reuben for Merari: Kedemoth and Mephaath, closing out this part of the distribution.
  80. 1 Crónicas 6:80From the tribe of Gad, Merari receives Ramoth, in Gilead — another city of refuge — and Mahanaim, the city where Jacob saw angels of God in Genesis and where David takes refuge during Absalom’s revolt.
  81. 1 Crónicas 6:81The chapter closes with Heshbon and Jazer, also from Gad — bringing to an end the long list of forty-eight cities scattered across the whole of Israel just to sustain the tribe that received no territory of its own.
